Garden District Tags

The June Cards, Tags and More kit from Très Jolie is packed with a paper pad, a set of frames and a sticker sheet from Simple Stories’ Vintage Garden District collection, as well as coordinating cardstock and embellishments.

I decided that I would make a few tags, using the sentiments printed on some of the sheets as my focal point.

I dug out some Julie Nutting tags to use as my bases and began to create…

These tags are a half inch longer than the patterned paper, so I cut the paper in half and designed the tags to cover the resulting gap in the middle.

I dyed several feet of seam binding with the Lindy’s Magical powder that was included in the Mixed Media kit to use at ties.

The chipboard flourishes were treated with the gilding paste from the same Mixed Media kit.

The butterflies and leaves were punched out when I altered the metal envelope shown in my previous post.

 

I started with a piece of the cardstock; the bright pink makes a perfect contrasting base for the floral patterned paper. A length of crochet lace was glued down one side.

I selected sheet that featured a sentiment and a floral print and cut it down to fit the frame. I backed it with two layers of packaging before attaching it all to the tag.

I finished by adding some chipboard flourishes, a butterfly, and some gems from my stash.

This tag features the largest frame in the package covering a matching sheet of patterned paper, set on a dark green base. I selected a few matching butterflies and adhered a couple blooms and vines and a gemmed hexagon (from the next tag) in the corner.

As I was digging out my butterfly punches, I realized that I haven’t used my hexagon one for quite a while. I cut a bunch of shapes from scraps and after inking the sides, backed them with foam tape to add some dimension.

I cut a half inch from the bottom of my base tag so my patterned paper would fit without being halved and began to adhere my hexagons. I added one of the journaling card-sized pieces of paper, a small sticker backed with foam tape, a butterfly and flower. I finished my tag by cutting one of the punched leaves in half and tucking the stems under the bloom.

   I took out another neglected punch for this one and created a border strip to contrast with the pink butterfly pattern. The journaling card was backed with several layers of packaging and glued down. I embellished it with several blooms and flourishes and a few punched butterflies.

Lots of layers here: the checked base is topped with distressed layers and tags, a punched butterfly, and a double layer of crochet trim on the bottom.

A lot of scraps went into this one. I used the pale yellow cardstock from the kit as my base and the rest of the pretty paper from the Love Thing tag for the next layer. The reverse of the dark green used for the border strip on the It All Begins… tag, then a doily from a previous kit, then a banner using the reverse side of the pink checked base of the Do Everything with Love tag finished the base of this one. I topped it all with another journaling card, chipboard flourishes, a punched butterfly and matching heart stickers backed with bits of packaging.

An Altered Metal Envelope

I’ve used two of the June Très Jolie offerings – the Mixed Media Kit, containing several new mediums and a metal envelope from BCI Crafts, and the Cards, Tags and More Kit, featuring a pretty collection from Simple Stories – to create a wall hanging.

 

Here’s how it all came together.

 

I started by creating a couple of test patches on the back of the metal piece. First, I applied the crackle paste straight from the jar. Next, I added a healthy dollop of the Magical powder to the same paste and spread it on the surface.

 

I allowed it to dry completely and decided to use the Magical mixture. (I sanded these patches off later.)

 

I placed a piece of scrap paper inside the envelope and proceeded to cover the front of the envelope. As you can see, the paste is thick; I applied this very quickly before it became unspreadable.

 

Dried and crackled; my project was ready for the next step. (By the way, it didn’t occur to me to prime the metal with clear gesso to give it “teeth. I do wish I had done this.)

Next, I took the crackled envelope and a bottle of Krylon matte finish outside and sprayed the crackle surface, allowed it to dry, and sprayed it again to seal the paste. (It’s important to do this outdoors; the fumes are intense.) This spray dries almost instantly, but I kept it outside for about a half hour to be certain that it was set.

 

I coated the inside “flap” with matte gel medium…

 

…covered it with a sheet from the paper pad that I had cut to measure and treated the edges with gilding polish.

 

I selected a piece from the sticker sheet and covered the back with cornstarch to undo the adhesive coating.

 

I placed a couple of pieces of foam tape to the back of the sticker to give it dimension...

 

…and adhered it to the base.

 

I traced the shape of the chalkboard pieces onto two of the journaling cards from the paper pad, cut them out and glued them on, using matte gel medium. The edges and clothespins were coated with gilding polish.

 

I dusted off a leaf punch and created some vines out of the Lemon Craft paper from the Cards Kit.

 

I used my scraps to punch out some butterflies.

A few flowers from the kits…

…and some butterflies, inked and backed with packaging…

 

…and a few of the vines, inked and placed under the flowers completed my project.
