Heritage

A very quick and simple layout, created with the January Scrapbook Kit from Tres Jolie, featuring my great-grandparents, John and Jane McCormick.

John was born in Ireland in 1838 to Patrick and Margaret Hughes McCormick. The family immigrated to America in 1850, when John was 12 years old. They settled in Riga, a rural community just outside of Rochester, New York.

In 1875, he married Jane Keenan, the daughter of Edward and Catherine Hanlon Keenan. From the records that we’ve found while tracing our family, it seems that she was the first child in her family to have born here in the United States.

They had seven children; my grandmother was the sixth.

This studio photo is dated c.1878.

The January kit came with the gorgeous Bohemian Heart paper pad from Prima, along with several paper doilies and a set of Tres Jolie’s laser cut chipboard leaves.

I’ve matted the photo with a few scraps, adding chipboard between the layers and inking all of the edges before assembling. I placed one of the paper doilies on the bottom and glued it all down in a spot ready designed to display my image.

The flower clusters were all fussy cut from the element sheet on the back of the cover, inked, and placed around the photo.

I treated the chipboard leaves with several layers of Distress Ink and tucked them under the clusters to finish my layout.

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

This layout, featuring one of my grandsons trimming the tree back in 2015, is my entry in the December 2023 Mood Board challenge.

December is a busy month: making and sending cards, baking, shopping and all that, but I was determined to create at least one layout before the end of the year.

This was an easy one! The papers and die cut ephemera pieces make a perfect background for my photo, and the chipboard ornaments make a wonderful embellishment cluster.

I started by altering the chipboard pieces by applying a Finnabair Metallic wax with a stipple brush. I added some bows using twine from my stash.

I selected a sheet of patterned paper to use as my background and another sheet to cut up as layering pieces behind the photo. After distressing and inking the edges, I glued them together using packaging in between to add dimension. I selected a few pieces of ephemera to form a cluster in the corner. There seemed to be something missing on the side. I cut a small piece from the sheet that I had selected to use for the title and placed it on the side. I like how the relative brightness adds to my composition.

I finished my layout by adhering the chipboard ornaments down the side, using foam tape.

Today Is Full of Possiblities

For my third January project, I thought I’d use another 8” x 10” canvas as a base, this time covering it with one of the beautiful sheets of patterned paper that came in Tres Jolie's January Scrapbook Kit and taking advantage of the print on another sheet to create a focal point.

I trimmed the base sheet to 8.25” x 10.25” and distressed and inked the edges before adhering it to the canvas with a thick layer of matte gel. (Tip: Place a book in that hollow center of your canvas as you apply mixed media; this will give you a level surface.) I cut my focal piece and trimmed it lengthwise to 10.25”, then inked and distressed the edges. I glued this to two layers of cardboard and adhered it to the base.

The chipboard flourishes were primed with clear gesso and then covered with embossing powder. It came out a bit darker than I expected, but the deep green makes a nice contrasting element against the soft blues.

I seem to be on a resin kick all of a sudden… I selected a mold featuring a large frame and filled it with cast resin. This sets in a matter of minutes and I was able to begin coloring it within a half an hour. I used a stipple brush to apply Old Denim wax all over the frame, making sure that I got into the cracks and creases. I let it set for a few minutes, then used my finger to lightly burnish the surface with White Pearl wax.

Time to assemble my piece… I positioned my frame around the large bloom that’s on the patterned paper and glued it down. The chipboard flourishes were cut in half and placed at the edges of the frame. I selected several of the blooms that came in the kit; the ivory and the blues are perfect embellishments. Before attaching the dangle charms, I covered the cork and metal surfaces with wax so they would blend in.

The resin bird was burnished with wax – first the blue then the white – and glued to the frame.

I finished my piece by selecting a quote sticker and backing it with a scrap and attaching it to the frame.
