In the Leaves

 

Autumn is here and what could be more evocative of the season than this series of photos from twelve years ago?

This design is inspired by the October sketch from My Creative Scrapbook.

I began this layout by stripping the top layer from a piece of corrugated cardboard. (Tip: Using a spray bottle, lightly moisten the surface with water and allow it to set for a few minutes. That layer will come right off, leaving some schmutz here and there – perfect for a rustic look.)

Next, I selected a few rub-ons from the 49 & Market Plum Grove collection and applied them to a sheet of Bazzill cardstock, making two rows of DIY patterned paper.

I cut 6” from the bottom of the Falling Leaves sheet and divided this into two pieces measuring 4.5” and 1.5”. The larger piece was flipped over, showing the stripes, then I glued the smaller bit to the center. This was glued to the corrugate base, making sure that there would be plenty of room to tuck the next items under the top and bottom edges.

I tore the edges of the cardstock/rub-on pieces, then cut these in half, allowing me to create two layered pieces. These were tucked under the edges of my center piece. I added a couple of strips from the Laser Cut Elements to balance it out.

I selected five tags from the Tag Elements sheet. Using a circle punch, I cut out the holes on top. I glued some scraps of the Bazzill cardstock and glued them to the backs of the tags, then punched out the holes again. After backing the photos with cardboard, I attached them to the plain tags. I used a pencil to write the title and date on the journaling tag. I cut five pieces of twine and attached them to the tags, then glued four of them to the page, saving the patterned one to embellish the top.

I layered six of the leaf piles from the Laser Cut Elements and topped them with a rake. Next, I added a leaf to the tag and decided that nothing else was needed there. To embellish the top corner, I cut a couple of small strips from the cardstock scraps, attached a couple of sentiments from the sticker sheet and two leaf pieces from the Laser Cuts.

I finished my layout with a title piece selected from the In the Leaves Chipboard Stickers.

The Fairies' Festival

 

Prima’s new Cherry Sweet collection immediately put to mind this photo of my Granddaughter taken in 2013 as she prepared for her ballet recital.

This design is inspired by the September sketch from My Creative Scrapbook. I have a hard time working with busy designs, so I chose the Thoughts from My Heart paper as the main background and the Dreaming of Pink Skies sheet to form background pieces.

I started by cutting a square from the center of the Pink Skies sheet, measuring 1.5” from the borders. The outer piece was glued to a 11.75” square of cardboard to create a base for the layout. Next, I cut the Dreaming paper in half and cut .5” from the left side, resulting in a piece measuring 11.5” x 6”. The right half was trimmed by 1.5” from the bottom, making a piece measuring 10.5” x 6”. These pieces were glued to packaging, then inked around the sides and adhered to the base.

I cut a few pieces from the Pink Skies sheet to create matting layers to place underneath the photo. All of these were glued to pieces of packaging, inked around the sides, glued together, and adhered to the page.

I grabbed a few tags and inked them and placed them down the side of the photo. I cut a circle from one more of the tags and glued it down. Next came the embellishments: some die cut cherries and a few blooms placed beneath the tags. As a final touch, I added the title piece to the bottom of my photo.

Happiness Is...

I scrapped this photo four years ago; the Nature’s Haven collection from 49 and Market inspired this “re-do”. Behind the house where I grew up there was an arbor leading to a flower garden. In early Spring, most of the garden was bare, save for a few perennials as the ground was turned and planted in preparation for the beautiful varieties that grew in the Summer. By then, the vines around and over the arbor itself would have sprouted leaves and sweet tea roses, creating a shady refuge from the sun.
I have so many wonderful childhood memories of playing house there with my sister; we would bring out our dolls and blankets and our toy dishes and such and set up for a day of domestic fun. As I grew older, those benches provided the perfect spot for curing up with a book, surrounded with the fragrance of the flowers and the chirping of birds all around. I decided to scrap this latter memory of soft, slow summer days and the pleasures I had reading.

I started by cutting into the K and Company paper 2” from the edge all around to give me a border piece and an 8” square to use for matting. Next, I trimmed the Berry Delight sheet by ¼” all around. I distressed the edges and adhered it to the border piece.

I cut out a piece of the remaining K and Company paper slightly larger than my photo and distressed the edges; I gave my photo the same treatment. These were glued together with several pieces of cardboard underneath to give my piece some dimension.

Next, I selected bits from the die cuts and laser cuts. After inking the edges, I started to arrange my layout. Once I was satisfied – but before gluing – I applied some rub-ons here and there around the page.

I assembled my pieces, adding bits of cardboard behind some of the embellishments to add a bit of “pop”.
