Heritage

A very quick and simple layout, created with the January Scrapbook Kit from Tres Jolie, featuring my great-grandparents, John and Jane McCormick.

John was born in Ireland in 1838 to Patrick and Margaret Hughes McCormick. The family immigrated to America in 1850, when John was 12 years old. They settled in Riga, a rural community just outside of Rochester, New York.

In 1875, he married Jane Keenan, the daughter of Edward and Catherine Hanlon Keenan. From the records that we’ve found while tracing our family, it seems that she was the first child in her family to have born here in the United States.

They had seven children; my grandmother was the sixth.

This studio photo is dated c.1878.

The January kit came with the gorgeous Bohemian Heart paper pad from Prima, along with several paper doilies and a set of Tres Jolie’s laser cut chipboard leaves.

I’ve matted the photo with a few scraps, adding chipboard between the layers and inking all of the edges before assembling. I placed one of the paper doilies on the bottom and glued it all down in a spot ready designed to display my image.

The flower clusters were all fussy cut from the element sheet on the back of the cover, inked, and placed around the photo.

I treated the chipboard leaves with several layers of Distress Ink and tucked them under the clusters to finish my layout.

Today Is a Good Day

I’m so in love with Craft O’Clock’s Blooming Retreat collection that came in the October Scrapbooking Kit from Tres Jolie that I decided to create a third layout featuring a heritage photo of several of my mother’s uncles.

Lots of layering going on here: corrugate and paper scraps, all with torn edges and several groups of tags, fussy cut, lightly distressed and then inked. But!!!! that bottom layer is an illusion; it’s actually the pattern of the paper… The minute I saw it, I just knew that it would be perfect for the image I wanted to use.

The pattern and the layers make for a very busy design, so I kept the rest of my layout simple. I framed the photo with chipboard from the September kit and added a few sprigs and a butterfly from the remains of a package of flowers that came in the November 2018 kit.

Here are a few closeups:

This Is What Family Looks Like

I’m using the October Scrapbook Kit from Tres Jolie to scrap some heritage photos; the colors and images are perfect for this purpose. Last week, I posted a layout featuring my maternal Great Grandmother; this is my father’s side of the family – my Great-Grandparents Jessie and Edward Wood and five of their children: Charles, Jennie, Bradford, Nellie and (my grandfather) Fremont – taken around 1923.

I’ve used the October Mood Board as inspiration, with hints of greens and pinks in the flowers and the images of stones reflected in the small scattering of art stones. I love that center image with the woven basket and fibers that blends so well with the woven chairs in the photo and the hint of burlap that I’ve used for matting. This month’s twist is “Fall”; my layout is full of autumnal hues and textures.

My photo is matted with several layers of patterned paper, cut and lightly distressed, along with a bit of burlap. Each layer is backed with thin chipboard to add dimension.

I fussy cut several floral images and layered them along the side.

I took one half of the Split Mandala 2 chipboard border and colored it with Ground Espresso distress ink before placing it below the photo. The embellishment cluster was made with a few of the gorgeous Sharon Ziv blooms, several pieces of the Craft O’Clock die cuts and some of the Beaded Berries, all from the kit.

I finished my page by borrowing a scattering of the Art Stones that came in the Mixed Media Kit.
