Saturday Morning Down the Shore

 

There seems to be a bit of a beach theme in my last few postings. Pure coincidence: the materials that I’ve been working with have been perfect for the images that I’ve used. This layout, however, is different. The AB Studio Diva collection, full of pinks, purples and grays and bold patterns, cries out for equally bold and dramatic images to match. However, this photo of my grandsons has been on the top of my “must do” pile since June and I wanted to find a way to use it. I think that the “B” side of this sheet, with the distressed stone pattern in the center, fits perfectly.

 

 I’ve based this on the August sketch from Très Jolie. I like the way it features layers on layers and details such as the shapes of the chipboard embellishments that came in the kit.

I started with those chipboard pieces, coating them with black gesso and them treating them with embossing powder.

Next, I prepared my tags. First, I cut one from the “Desire” sheet (it’s filled with a nice variety of tags and flowers and clocks), punched out the hole and inked the edges. I created two more tags from stripped USPS packaging and fastened jute string to all the tops.

I created the layers under the photo with the tags and two stitched frames from the June kit. Next, I attached the chipboard keys and chains and added the flowers.

I finished my page with shells and a piece of Flair from my stash.

And that was it: a quick and easy layout featuring a lazy Saturday morning down the Jersey Shore.

Tropical Sunset: A Mixed Media Project

I’ve used a photo I took in Aruba back in 2005 as my focal point for this project, made with the July Mixed Media Kit from Très Jolie.

 

 The kit came with several items from AB Studio (a chipboard panel, 2 acrylic gears, and a sheet of beautiful elements perfect for fussy cutting) as well as a package of flowers from 49 and Market and a set of alcohol inks from Ranger Ink.

While there is enough in the kit to make several projects, I decided to use them all at once to create a wall hanging large enough to display a 5” x 7” photo to full advantage.

I took an 8” x 10” canvas from my stash and covered it with black gesso to create a base.

While this was drying, I proceeded to treat the acrylic gears, using an applicator and felts, and blending solution from my own supplies.

I started dabbing the Purple Twilight on top and used the Sunset Orange in the center, followed by the Sunshine Yellow on the bottom, blending the colors as they met. I applied a bit of the mixative to the top and blended it in a bit to soften the tone. Next, I dripped a bit of the blending solution here and there to give it all a mottled effect.

I began to assemble my pieces. Using Beacon 3-in-1, I glued the acrylic gears to the canvas so that they would meet evenly in the middle. Once they were set, I attached the chipboard panel, making sure that the bottom met the edge of the canvas.

I treated the chipboard panel in the same order, then used my applicator to dab the mixative all over the piece.

 I matted my photo with a piece of black cardstock, taped it to a flat piece of chipboard and glued it down.

I used the entire package of flowers that came in the kit plus a bloom from a previous kit. To fill it out, I added a few fussy cut flowers from the Elements sheet.

Blowing in the Wind

I mentioned in my last post how the In the Past collection from AB Studios was perfect for masculine layouts. I find that it’s just as perfect for this photo of my granddaughter taken early in April when the trees were full of blossoms.

Again, I used Très Jolie’s June sketch, this time flipping it 180°.

I began by cutting an 8” square from the center of the bottom sheet; I would only need the edges to show. After trimming the top layer to a 11 ½” square, I taped it to a piece of packaging and adhered it to the base sheet.

I fashioned three long double layered tags from scraps and the beautiful music cardstock from the kit and tied them with ribbon from my stash.

Once they were layered and glued to my page, I added some of the crochet lace that came in the kit.

I glued one of the stitched frames to my photo and another to a scrap of patterned paper and layered them on top of the tags.

I used the gilding paste that came in the Mixed Media kit to color the Music chippie and glued it down. I just love the flow of this piece.

I embellished the arrangement with flowers from my stash and leaves punched from the music cardstock.

I finished my page with a title made with a label maker.
