Think Pink! - A Pair of Occasional Cards

Last month, I created several “mailable” cards, designed to fit into a regular envelope and into a mailbox. This month’s Cards, Tags and More Kit, with the Tres Jolie chipboard, Altair Art’s Think Pink! papers, doily die, and sentiment stamp could have been used in the same way, but the glittery flowers and box of shaker elements were just too tempting. Here’s what I created:

Both cards with layered with cardstock from my stash and inked around the edges with Distress Archival ink. I also used that ink to create my greeting pieces, using the stamp set that came in the kit. I used foam tape under the greetings to add some dimension.

And here’s a bit of a breakdown:

The first card contains a shaker element created with the die. I added several flowers, some fussy cut leaves and a sentiment.

Here’s how I created the shaker:

Use the die to cut 3 doily pieces from the patterned paper. Run a thin piece of chipboard (I use the backing that comes on paper pads, etc.) through your machine, again using the die. This will not cut the chipboard but will leave an impression that you can use to create a template. Cut the centers from the doilies. (This will be easy; you die cuts will have dotted lines around the middle.) Glue your pieces together and set aside. Using the chipboard template, create 3 rings, first cutting on that dotted line, then around it. As you see, you don’t have to aim for total perfection.

Use one of the rings to trace a circle from patterned paper. This should cover the outside of your rings. (Not shown; sorry): Grab a piece of acetate packaging and cut a circle that will be the same size. Glue the chipboard rings together, coat thoroughly with white gesso and allow to dry. Now make a sandwich with the acetate piece in the center between the paper and chipboard, being careful to not leave any gaps.

Now for the fun: flip the piece so the top is down and fill with shaker bits. (Don’t overdo it, a little goes a long way!)

Attach the paper circle to the bottom, again being careful of gaps.

And there you have it: a fun (and beautiful) shaker element.

The kit comes with a beautiful set of chipboard ivy pieces from Tres Jolie. I pretreated them with white gesso and then colored them with Prima Sparks acrylic paint. After adhering them to the card base, I added three of those beautiful flowers and a banner stamped with the “Hello!” sentiment.

I scattered some of the sequins and beads from the shaker elements here and there and finished my card by splattering it with watered-down white gesso.

Hope Is Never Lost: A Mixed Media Project

Tres Jolie’s Mixed Media Kit for September comes jam-packed with a canvas board, rice paper from Ciao Bella, a set of chipboard frames, a full package of Tim Holtz ephemera, various mediums (and a set of palette knives to apply them!): all you need to let your imagination run wild! I added a few things from my stash and came up with this…

And here’s the kit itself:

I began by applying an uneven coat of crackle medium from the February Mixed Media Kit to the wood frame and putting it aside. (That uneven coat will result in uneven cracking, which is what I was going for.) Once the medium was set, I painted the frame with white gesso, again coating it unevenly.

Next, I used the collage medium to adhere the rice paper to the canvas. While it was still wet, I tore around the edges to give it a ragged appearance. I grabbed a stencil from my stash and used one of the palette knives to apply the crackle medium.

I selected the smaller of the circle frames and covered it with the mousse, using my fingers to rub it in. While I was at it, I applied the mousse to the edges of the canvas.

I selected several of the ephemera pieces to use as layers behind the frame and one piece to use as my focal image. After inking the edges, I glued it all down, using USPS packaging between the layers to add dimension. Once that was done, I added the chipboard frame as my top layer.

I added a quote chip, again from my stash, and declared it “done”.
