Dwell in Possibility

The April Mixed Media Kit from Tres Jolie is all about experimenting; it comes with a couple of canvas boards, a stencil from The Crafter’s Workshop, a package of flowers from Prima and all sorts of mediums to play with. I’ve added some of the chipboard pieces from the other kits and a few items from my stash to come up with this:

The “experimenting” is key here; I more or less made this up as I went along, just trying this and that and seeing what would happen.

I started by coating both of the canvas boards with the glitter gel. Once it was set, I poured a small amount of crackle medium (from the February kit) in the centers and spreading it to the edges with a palette knife.

This took a few hours to dry. I spent a little bit of that time treating the chipboard pieces: I covered the butterflies with more of the glitter gel and sprayed the lace borders with the Distress Oxide mist. (When dry, this looks more like a dark concrete gray rather than a true black, but that was fine.)

My next step was a little “out there”. The texture paste is just that: a thickish paste. But I wondered what would happen if I were to use it more like an acrylic paint, so I used a brush to cover my canvas boards and chipboard pieces. I love the results – as you can see, there is some slight cracking on the chippies and in the areas where the crackle medium coating is light and huge cracks where the medium is thick, allowing a lot of the glitter to come through. I used the Nuvo drops to decorate the edges of the chippies and set everything aside to set.

Next, I dabbed embossing adhesive through the stencil and added the embossing powder. (Love this stuff: it melts beautifully, resulting in a coppery sheen.)

The flowers come with yellow centers – not a good match for my canvas. I used one of the Lindy’s Magical powders from the March kit to alter them to blend in.

I glued the canvas boards to a long piece of packaging, then attached the borders to the edges, using gel medium. Next, I added the flowers and butterflies and finished my piece with a quote chip that I had edged with wax from the June 2019 kit.

The Arbor

Behind the house where I grew up there was an arbor leading to a flower garden. In early Spring, most of the garden was bare, save for a few perennials as the ground was turned and planted in preparation for the beautiful varieties that grew in the Summer. By then, the vines around and over the arbor itself would have sprouted leaves and sweet tea roses, creating a shady refuge from the sun.

I have so many wonderful childhood memories of playing house there with my sister; we would bring out our dolls and blankets and our toy dishes and such. As I grew older, those benches provided the perfect spot for curing up with a book, surrounded with the fragrance of the flowers and the chirping of birds all around.

This was created with the April Scrapbook Kit from Tres Jolie, along with a few items from the April Mixed Media kit. This kit, featuring gorgeous papers from 13 @rts and flowers from 49 and Market, is truly amazing!

I began by using the texture paste and the stencil to create a bit of texture around the area that I would be using for my focal image. I love how the pattern reflects the image in the photo so well.

I used the piece of patterned paper that was left from my “Bella Donna” layout to create layers, distressing the untorn edges and inking all around, then adhering packaging under each piece to create dimension.

I took flowers from all three of the 49 and Market packages and placed them around the photo. Next, I selected a few of the ephemera pieces and trimmed them close to the images and tucked them in layers here and there around the main flower cluster.

To finish, I backed a sticker with a small piece of chipboard and glued it to the corner of my photo.
