This Time

I came up with this inspired by the April Kit and Mood Board from the Tres Jolie Kit Club, where the topic was all about flowers and foliage. There’s a lot of fussy cutting here, along with a bit of mixed media using mediums from my stash. (Having built up quite a collection, I’m determined to begin to use it all up!)

I started by looking over a few of the 6”x 6” sheets that came in the kit, selecting those that contained the images and colors that I would need, and spending a few hours cutting them out.

Once that was done, I selected two tubes of Impasto paint. I squeezed out a bit of the Mint and watered it down to a thin acrylic consistency and used it to cover the sides of an 8”x 11” canvas. I watered it down a bit more and lightly spread it here and there on a shutter from my stash.

I used a heat tool on the canvas to make sure that it was completely dry. I had already selected one of the 12”x 12” papers (I love how it looks like the weathered outside of a cottage.) and trimmed it down to a bit over 8”x 11”. After heavily distressing the edges, I adhered it to the canvas using matte gel medium.

I created some “bricks” using texture paste and a very old stencil and let it set completely before lightly applying Boudoir Pink Impasto over the surface to evoke a worn effect.

The center of the shutter piece was backed with a bit of patterned paper that had been treated with Old Paper Distress Paint and then fastened to the canvas.

Next, I started with my layering, using bits of packaging behind some of the pieces to add dimension. I kept on adding flower images until I was satisfied and then placed some of the flower embellishments – some from the kit and a few from my stash. Once that was done, I began to glue down the vine images underneath the cluster. My project still needed something, so I added a few pieces to the upper shutter and a few more to the upper corner and finished it all with a Wishing Bauble as my title piece.

Today Is Full of Possiblities

For my third January project, I thought I’d use another 8” x 10” canvas as a base, this time covering it with one of the beautiful sheets of patterned paper that came in Tres Jolie's January Scrapbook Kit and taking advantage of the print on another sheet to create a focal point.

I trimmed the base sheet to 8.25” x 10.25” and distressed and inked the edges before adhering it to the canvas with a thick layer of matte gel. (Tip: Place a book in that hollow center of your canvas as you apply mixed media; this will give you a level surface.) I cut my focal piece and trimmed it lengthwise to 10.25”, then inked and distressed the edges. I glued this to two layers of cardboard and adhered it to the base.

The chipboard flourishes were primed with clear gesso and then covered with embossing powder. It came out a bit darker than I expected, but the deep green makes a nice contrasting element against the soft blues.

I seem to be on a resin kick all of a sudden… I selected a mold featuring a large frame and filled it with cast resin. This sets in a matter of minutes and I was able to begin coloring it within a half an hour. I used a stipple brush to apply Old Denim wax all over the frame, making sure that I got into the cracks and creases. I let it set for a few minutes, then used my finger to lightly burnish the surface with White Pearl wax.

Time to assemble my piece… I positioned my frame around the large bloom that’s on the patterned paper and glued it down. The chipboard flourishes were cut in half and placed at the edges of the frame. I selected several of the blooms that came in the kit; the ivory and the blues are perfect embellishments. Before attaching the dangle charms, I covered the cork and metal surfaces with wax so they would blend in.

The resin bird was burnished with wax – first the blue then the white – and glued to the frame.

I finished my piece by selecting a quote sticker and backing it with a scrap and attaching it to the frame.

Beautiful Day

Today, I’d like to share my take on Tres Jolie’s January Mood Board using the latest Scrapbook Kit, filled with the Walk in the Clouds collection from Paper Heaven, and a gorgeous array of coordinating flowers and chipboard pieces. Here’s what I came up with…

And here’s the Mood Board that inspired it…

The “B” side of Sheet 4 makes a perfect background for my image: a photo taken by my brother a few years ago of Kent’s Point in Cape Cod.

I wanted to add some stenciled images, so I began by backing the paper with a piece of cardboard that I had trimmed to 11.5” x 11.5. (I like to use Scor-Tape for this; it’s a very strong adhesive that will create a permanent bond.)

I used crackle paste and a stencil from my stash to create snowflakes in random spots.

While this was drying, I took out one of the chipboard borders and primed it with several coats of white gesso before covering it with Unicorn Effect Paste to give it an icy look.

I matted my photo with a piece of corrugated cardstock from a DCWV stack that I’ve had for years. To make it look “not flat”, I tore it here and there and then layered the pieces with the torn edges showing.

I’ve been hoarding a Prima vine since March; I cut off a few sections and treated it with white gesso to soften the color. I did the same with one of the Blue River blooms that came in the kit. Time to assemble my page: I backed the photo with packaging and glued it to the corrugated layers, then attached the treated chipboard piece to the bottom. I added one of the resin birds from the kit, then the flowers, finishing it all with a Quotation sticker.
