In My Heart - A Mixed Media Project

Today, I’d like to share the project that I made with the November Mixed Media Kit from Tres Jolie: a frame with layers and layers of mediums featuring a photo I love: that’s my Aunt Bernie holding a very young “me” in the summer of 1947.

Even with the layers, this was a quick project, as all of the mediums dried fairly quickly. I began by assembling the frame and gluing it down with Art Glitter Glue. Once it was set, I primed the entire surface with white gesso. Next, I applied a thin coat of crackle medium (from an older kit) here and there – just enough to add some “see-through” texture. Still using a paint brush, I began to apply the Texture Paste that came in the kit, beginning with the Burnt Sienna, then the Royal Blue and finishing with the Lavender here and there. I allowed it to dry completely, then rubbed it in spots with sandpaper before using my finger to apply the Matte Wax, again just here and there. I finished by watering down a bit of the Lavender paste and lightly going over the surface with a fan brush.

I glued my photo to a piece of chipboard before attaching it to the baking piece and glued it down. I added that gorgeous Prima vine and Quote Chip (inked around the edges) from my stash and called it “done”

A few closeups:

Fall Tag Album

The November Cards, Tags and More Kit from Tres Jolie comes packed with patterned papers, flowers, ephemera, and metal charms from Prima and – best of all – two packages of Tres Jolie’s own laser cut chipboard: Large Tags and Fall Bundle – a collection of eight beautiful pieces with an autumn theme. The colors of the paper were a perfect match with the cardstock that came in the October Cards Kit, so I added that to my pile.

I decided to go with “More” and created a mini album, filled with tags and those beautiful chipboard pieces.

Here’s how it all came together:

Begin by treating the Fall Bundle pieces with Prima waxes, applying the different colors with a toothpick so I could cover each small area. (No waxes? No problem! Any medium you have should work. I would suggest that you first prime the pieces with white or clear gesso if you’re working with a more liquid paint.) Put the pieces aside to set while you assemble the album base.

Select two of the chipboard tags. Paint around the edges on both sides with white gesso. (Not shown: Select 4 pieces of cardstock, trace around the tags and trim to fit.)

Trim a piece of white cardstock to 7” x 7”. Score at 1”, 1-1/4”, 1-5.8”, 2”, 2-1/4”, 2-5/8”, 3”, 3-14”, 3-5/8”, 4”, 4-1/4”, 4-5/8”, 5”, 5-1/4”, 5-5/8”, 6”.

Fold as shown, creating 3/8” “hill” and 1/4” “valleys”.

Turn the cardstock over so that the “valleys” are on top. Using a pencil, place an “x” on the bottom 3/8” folds. Place a strip of Scor-Tape (or Red Line tape) on the marked lengths. (Don’t use a tape runner for this step; the adhesive isn’t strong enough.)

Strip the backing off the tape and carefully fold the lengths together. You should now have a piece that looks like this, with 1-1/4” edges scored 1/4” from the center. Fold at that 1/4”, creating 1” edges.

Glue (or tape) each edge to one of the tags, being careful to line up the edge of the tag with the fold.

Your project should look like this, with the “hills” facing up and the tag on your left.

Attach the other tag in the same manner. You’ve just created a base for your tag album.

Glue two of those pieces of cardstock that you traced and cut to the inside of your album. (Don’t cover the outside yet!) Cut 5 pieces of cardstock to 7” x 8” and each at 4”. Fold over to create 7” x 4”.

Glue the cardstock to the spine as shown, making sure that the edges line up evenly with the folds.

Turn your album over and with a pencil, mark the centers of your tags. Apply Scor-Tape across the lines.

Cut a length of seam binding or ribbon to 33”. Attach to one of the covers, then close your album to that it fits evenly across the center, then attach it to the other half. Cover the tags with the other two pieces of cut cardstock.

To create the spine, cut a piece of the patterned paper to 3” x 7”. Score at 5/8” and 2-5/8”. Attach to the album, gluing thoroughly.

Create pockets by cutting paper and journaling cards to a width of 4-1/2” and scoring the sides and bottoms at 1/4”. Fold over and miter the corners as shown.

Begin to assemble and decorate your pages, using tags, ephemera, and those wonderful chipboard pieces that you’ve colored.

Here’s what I did with my album:
