Peace and Joy: A Set of Tags

Whether for gift giving or cookie exchanges or simply for tree ornaments, DIY tags are quick, easy, and so much fun to put together. I’ve used the December Scrapbook Kit from Tres Jolie to create a few that are sure to be keepsakes.

I started by cutting three pieces of thin chipboard 8.5” x 3.5” and trimming the upper corners. I used a 1/4” circle punch to make somewhat large holes for the trims, as I planned on using several on each tag. Next, I cut two pieces of pattern paper to fit the back and front of each piece of chipboard, attaching them one at a time so I knew where to punch the holes. I cut a third piece of paper 8.25” x 3.25”, trimmed the corners and glued it to the front. I used the rub-ons, bubbles and cutouts here and there to begin decorating, then added flowers and words from the UPC strips on the bottom of the paper sheets (backed with foam tape) before finishing them off with dyed seam binding.

I chose to use a busy pattern for the background layer, then a plainer piece. I added music note rub-ons, then two cutouts backed with foam tape and glued three of those gorgeously glittered flowers on top. Next, I scattered a few of the fun bubble pieces here and there and finished with an off-set title on top.

This busy – but so pretty – pattern didn’t need much in the way of embellishment, so I kept it simple with t berry cut-out, a cluster of flowers and a title.

This is the paper that made me want to make a set of tags; the image on the bottom is so, so gorgeous. I added a rub-on greeting, a cluster of flowers and stems and a few of the bubbles to fill out the top.

She Felt Invisible - A Tag for Tres Jolie

Today, I’m sharing the project that I made using Tres Jolie’s Mixed Media Kit for May: an oversized tag covered with rice paper and a bit of stenciling and decorated with some fun flowers made with a Shrink Prink frosted sheet.

I started by cutting my flower pieces, using two of my favorite Sizzix dies: Tattered Florals and Tattered Leaves and coloring them with markers.

No need for perfection here as you can see.

I used my heat tool to shrink and shape the pieces. (Check out Kim’s YouTube tutorial for a perfect “how to”.)

I coated my tag with gel medium and covered it with one of the rice paper sheets that came in the kit. Using a brayer, I smoothed the paper down, starting in the center and rolling toward the edges. While the gel was still wet, I tore the paper around the edges of the tag, using my finger to press the fibers down to lie flat. I set it aside to dry.

The kit comes with three jars of modeling paste and a small stencil. I used these to create some areas of interest around the surface.

I began to add the flowers and leaves, layering them as I went. (After some trial and error, I found that Fabri-Tac glue worked best.) I added some pearls from my stash to the centers of the two largest flowers.

I finished my tag by punching a hole at the top and adding several lengths of seam binding.
