Heart Wreath for Valentine's Month

I’ve used this photo of my Wedding Day in 1968 several times, but this is the one image that came to mind when I opened up the February Mixed Media kit from Tres Jolie.

I started by applying the Fire Brick watercolor to my wreath, adding more and less water here and there and leaving some spots white.

While that was drying, I gave my chippie pieces several thick coats of gesso. Next, I applied the same gesso to my flower centers then dry brushed the petals.

Assembly was quick. First, I glued my framed photo to the wreath, adding strips of cardboard in back to add stability.
In order to extend my chipboard pieces, I cut them in half and placed them over and under my photo, reserving one piece for the cluster on the other side.

To finish my project, I added the “Love” resin word from the kit and a few resin butterflies that I’ve had for a while…

Memories

I don’t have many pictures of my mother- and father-in-law. They never owned a camera, so all we have are the few that were taken by friends. This was probably taken in the late 40’s and because the beach behind them is so empty, I know that it can’t have been any of the ones in Brooklyn. They also liked Rockaway Beach Queens, so I’m going to go with that.
This was a wonderful way for New York City dwellers to cool off in the summer: People would pack a lunch and a blanket or two and take the subway to their destination. The kids would cool off in the water and the adults would simply relax on the sand.

This design is based on the February 2019 sketch from Tres Jolie.

I started out by giving the paper a very thick coat of clear gesso. Not only did this prepare for some stenciling, but it lightened up the dark color a bit and added a bit more texture to the background. I taped the UPC strip to the side to create some interest.
I used an old Memory Box stencil and heavy gesso to create several flows of hearts on the page. While that was setting, I coated my chipboard pieces with black gesso and then colored them with Prima waxes. (I confess that I’m addicted to the waxes; they go on so smoothly and the results are amazing!)
Next, I distressed and inked the edges of my photo and matting and adhered them together with a bit of cardboard in between to add some dimension.
Time to put it all together… I layered some fussy cutouts from the Rose Receipts paper, along with a bit of ephemera and a vellum sheet that was included in the flower package under the photo.
Before gluing on the frame and small hearts, I embellished them with some pearls from my stash. Next came the flowers and the title piece, another of the black resins that came in the kit.

A few closeups...

Smile

The February Kit from Tres Jolie is packed with so many goodies: paper, flowers, ephemera and a mould from Prima’s Midnight Garden collection, black resin pieces (also from Prima) and papers from 13 @rts’ Aqua Flora collection. The pretty colors and the watercolor feel of the designs from the latter have given me a chance to scrap this photo that my Daughter-In-Law took last fall. In addition, the Prima wax and concentrated watercolors that came in the Mixed Media kit inspired to take the watercolor look even further with my design.

To start, I took out one of my favorite stencils and stone effect paste and created a series of “bricks” here and there around the paper that had been pretreated with clear gesso. (I ended up covering most of what I did in the center.) Once the paste was set, I used a stipple brush to apply the wax to all of the “bricks”. I used my heat gun to help the wax spread a bit, and then applied another layer.

Next, I went over the surfaces with diluted watercolor (these are really concentrated!) and spritzed the page with water. I stood the paper on edge and used my heat gun to spread and dry the colors.
Next came my layering, using the reverse of one of the Midnight Garden papers, as well as another piece from 13 @rts. To add a bit of interest, I punched part of the edge of one of my layers and added some blue corrugate from my stash. Once everything (except the photo) was glued in place, I used the black watercolor (again, very diluted) to outline the varied layers and some of the “bricks”.

Meanwhile, I had created a flower and two leaves with the Prima mould and allowed them to set overnight before coloring them. I added flowers, some from the kit, and some from my stash and further embellished my photo with one of the resin pieces and a few pieces of ephemera.

I scattered a few micro beads here and called it “finished”.
