Old-Fashioned Lady

The “Old-Fashioned Lady” in the title is my grandmother at the age of 22 in the year 1915.

The image itself isn’t the best: it’s a copy of a scanned copy of a tintype, enlarged to almost twice its size. I do think that the graininess fits in well with the Blue Fern Studios’ Jane’s Memoirs collection that came in Très Jolie’s October 2020 kit. Even more, I think that the photo itself is a perfect fit for the sketch that Kim has challenged us with.

I selected the larger of the two chipboard frames and decided to “antique” it. First, I ran it through my Big Shot with an old Tim Holtz embossing folder to give it texture. Next, I covered it with Distress Ink in Black Soot and let it set. I finished it by using a stipple brush to apply a layer of metallic wax.

Now for the layering: I selected the papers that I wanted to use and tore and inked the edges of all but the bottom layer. This was hallowed out in the middle to create an 8” scrap and taped to packaging to give it stability. (Those two layers in the middle are from the same sheet, using the “A” and “B” sides.) I put all the scraps aside to use later and began to assemble my layout.

Among the goodies included in the kit was a length of gorgeous lace. I cut off 24” or so inches and soaked it in coffee to make it look aged. I used 12” of this to run down the side just under the top sheet and put the rest aside.

After adhering the layers of torn strips and lace, I taped an 11” x 7” piece of thin chipboard in the middle so the top sheet (torn on both sides) would lie flat.

The framed photo was backed with several layers of packaging to give it dimension and glued down.

I guess I went a little crazy with the flowers, even adding a few Darice blooms from an earlier kit. I cut the rest of the coffee-dyed lace and tucked it here and there.

The kit came with a package of chipboard butterflies, but they seemed to be awfully big for this page. (No worries; I know that I’ll find a use for them later!) I found a package of wood butterflies that I’ve had for a while that were perfect. I wanted them to blend with the flowers; a coating of Shaded Lilac and another of Wilted Violet around the edges did the trick…

The Darby Women

I’ve been playing with the colorization feature of PSE 2020 and came up with this image featuring my grandmother (second from left), her sister (last on the right) and her sisters-in-law, taken around 1948. If you take a good look at the photo, you can see that this process isn’t perfect (and I don’t have the patience to do much beyond the basic steps), but I love how it adds so much life compared to the original black & white.

Très Jolie’s May Kit, featuring the Hazy Street collection from Craft O’Clock, with the browns and teals and background images is perfect for heritage layouts.
I decided to use Sheet #6, with the light background texture in the center and the darker details around the edges for my base. The circle was cut from Sheet #3. I love the varied shades of brown; I found the image too busy for a full page, but perfect as a frame.
The lace is a piece from my stash. It’s actually white; I dunked it into a mug of coffee to turn it into aged perfection.
I started to “unbrighten” a few of the flowers with Distress stain. The results were much darker than I had planned, so I soaked them into that coffee mug. This removed some of the mist and left a very pretty shade of brown on teal.
The rest of the flowers (and leaves) were also given a coffee dunking and allowed to dry.
The tag in the background isn’t glued down. I decided to jot down the full names of the ladies and tuck it behind the photo: a rare bit of journaling on my part.

Oh Christmas Tree

Christmas 1973 wasn’t Bill’s first – he was all of 14 months old – but it was his first “aware” holiday. This is a snapshot I took of him with my mother-in-law on Christmas day.
I’ve wanted to scrap this photo for years; the Blue Fern Studios’ Christmas Cheer collection makes a perfect setting…

Layers and more layers and (did you notice?) no flowers make up the bulk of my layout…

I piled on and arranged a lot of the cut-aparts from the “Cheery Card” sheet along with bits and pieces from the ephemera pack to serve as matting behind my photo.

More layers, this time some fussy cut images from the “Delighted” sheet, inked and backed with thick foam tape to add dimension, replaced my normal flower cluster.
I dug into my Christmas stash and came up with a pine stem that I cut apart and tucked under the photo.

That Christmas stash also holds a lot of charms and trinkets. I selected a package of Adornments from last year that fit in with the paper. I altered them with Prima waxes, added matching strings of jute and “hung” them around the page.

As I was digging into the package of ephemera for a title for my “Christmas Mayhem” page, I saw another piece with a sentiment that would be perfect for this layout. I inked it, glued it to some packaging and put it aside, ready to serve as the title here.
