Celebrate: A Card and Matching Gift Bag

My last project for July is a card and gift bag set using the Cards, Tags and More Kit, containing a gorgeous collection of 12 x 12 papers and a die from Dress My Craft, flowers from 49 and Market and a stamp set from Ranger. These papers come in a variety of coordinating colors and patterns, perfect for layering. Their shiny surfaces give a touch of elegance to any project you wish to create.

I’ve created a card and a matching gift bag for a house warming, taking advantage of the architectural drawing – perfect for the top layer of the bag.

The bag itself is just a plain kraft bag, available just about anywhere.

I used the die that came with the kit to create a few doilies to tuck under the clusters of flowers on the bag and the card.

Your Story Matters: A Mixed Media Project for Tres Jolie Kit Club

The July Mixed Media Kit from Tres Jolie comes loaded with an 8” x 8” canvas board, a package of flowers from 49 and Market, several bottles of Dina Wakley acrylics, Ice Resin from Ranger, and (best of all) a beautiful Mould from Stamperia.

Here’s what I came up with using the kit and a few items from past shipments:

To tell the truth, I couldn’t decide which of the frames I wanted to work with so in the end, I used them all. The Ice Resin that comes in the kit is enough to fill two or three of the moulds; I supplemented this with Clear Cast resin from my stash. Kim has created a YouTube tutorial on how to mix and pour this medium; here’s a link.

Once I had filled the frames, I put it all aside to set overnight while I worked on the canvas.

I began by covering the entire surface with the Turquoise paint and setting that with my heat tool. Next, I lightly applied the other two paints here and there, using up and down brush strokes. Once that was dried, I spread a small amount of Texture Paste to the center to make sure that the acrylic wouldn’t bleed through.

I selected a stencil that came in the November 2018 Mixed Media Kit and started to apply the Paste, beginning at the upper corner of the canvas.

Next, I carefully placed the stencil over the blank space on the right, making sure that the images lined up and again, applied the Paste. (It helps to use masking or painter’s tape to hold the stencil down at this stage.) I repeated this step to cover the bottom.

To create the effect of old wallpaper, I lightly spritzed the surface with some Lindy’s Moonshadow Mist and blotted it with a paper towel.

I covered the resin frames with black gesso and let them dry, then applied Metallique Wax using a stipple brush.

I filled the frames with images taken from the Art Daily sticker pad that came in the June 2019 Cards, Tags and More Kit, added a sentiment sticker from the May 2019 Cards Kit and called it “done”.

Blessed

The soft colors and patterns of the paper collection that was included in Tres Jolie’s July ScrapbookKit put me in mind of this photo from 1940 of my Grandparent’s neighbors, Cora Cook and her daughter, Ruth. I never knew Ruth, but “Aunt” Cora was my neighbor and I have memories of a sweet lady who made the three and four-year-old me always welcome in her home.

I’ve used PSE20 to do a quick colorization. It brings such life to the old black and white image.

I’ve created a step-by-step tutorial to show how my page came together…

Cut the cover sheet into thirds and put the middle piece aside to use on another project.

Adhere the other two pieces to a 12 x 12 sheet of plain cardstock, leaving the middle bare.

Divide sheet #3 into thirds, this time by carefully tearing them. You want to have these pieces uneven; this will add interest to your design.

Glue the pieces to your base as shown, making sure to leave about a half inch at the tops open.

Paint your chipboard frame and title (available in the Tres Jolie Store) with a dark green medium. I’ve used acrylic paint, but any medium – ink, embossing powder, spray mist – will do.

Treat the leaves chipboard from the kit with a lighter shade of green. Again, any medium will do.

Cut up and glue two layers of the USPS box that your kit came in to the back of your photo. This will give it dimension and stability. (Optional: You may want to lightly ink the edges; it gives you a more finished look.) Adhere it to the frame and glue this down to your base.

Using a thin bead of glue, begin to tuck the lace under the torn edges, slightly pleating it as you go.

Remove the greenery from the two large flower clusters and add them to the corners of your frame.

Add the smaller blooms to fill out the clusters. Cut the leaf chipboard pieces apart and arrange them around the flowers.

Finish your page by adding the title piece just below the clusters.

Here are a few closeups:
