The Taste of Snow

One more photo from last December’s Christmas Tree Hunt: I just had to scrap this image of Mr. V. catching snowflakes on his tongue.

Still trying to make a dent in my pile of pattern paper, I chose to start with another sheet from FabScraps’ Timeless Travel collection – Stamp. This is a darker sheet with a bold design, not exactly suitable for an image that would get lost with that background, so after applying a base coat of clear gesso to make it sturdier and to give it some “teeth”, I used a silicone brush to coat it with watered-down gesso to tone it down. Next, I applied crackle paste through a stencil and set it aside to dry.

Meanwhile, I cut a 6” square from the center of a Bo Bunny sheet. (This is a great way to stretch your paper supplies; you can have an undersheet and still be able to create matting and small border strips.) I trimmed the square to form one of the matting layers and used a border punch on the resulting strips.

After distressing the edges of the FabScraps sheet, I adhered it to the undersheet and arranged my photo and matting layers off to one side. More of my stash – a package of silver snowflakes – proved to be just a tad bit shiny, so before gluing them on with E6000, I toned them down with an application of Metallique Wax.

Snow Crusted Mittens

Next up on my “to scrap” pile is this image of my grandson looking at his snow-crusted mitten.

 

I cut a piece the FabScraps Stripe paper to fit under my photo and punched the edges here and there. Next, I tore a couple of book pages to form another layer. After inking them heavily, I crushed the pattern paper into a ball, flattened it out and taped it to a bit of packaging before adhering it to the Bo Bunny sheet. I glued the book pages in place (I like using glue here; it gives me the chance to adjust the paper to “just right”.), then adhered the photo that had been backed with another piece of packaging. I framed it all with a bare chippie – simply a circle left from a Blue Fern Studios package.

The branches were die cut from a mix of FabScraps Reed and Core’dinations cardstock. I topped them with some berries that I’ve had for years. 

I’ve added a few bits of 7 Dots Elements to give a bit of interest: the banners and the circle, all inked to give them an aged look.

To finish it off, I covered my photo and splattered my layout with watered-down gesso.

You Sparkle

This layout contains something that I haven’t done in a long time – handmade flowers! I fell out of practice because I’m up to my ears and beyond with packages of blooms that I’ve had left over and have been saving for years!

I started by prepping my paper with clear gesso to cut down on the warping that’s caused by wet mediums – in this case, light modeling paste applied through a stencil.

While that was drying, I stamped, die cut and shaped my flowers, using some Heartfelt Creations images.

I wanted to keep it pretty simple, so I used a couple of pieces to mat the photo, then added the blooms and topped them with a DIY cherub.

The title is a chippie that my good friend, Maggi Harding gave me. I’ve colored it with Distress Ink, then a few coats of embossing powder and a touch of Wink of Stella to make it shine.

To finish it off, I added a few pearls to the corner of my photo and scattered a few more around the page.
