Surf Patrol

The base of this page is more of the Blue Fern Studios Tranquility collection - the Patience sheet, with the colors that match the colors of the sky and the sea.
I've created a background to match the water using the Ranger Distress Grit Paste from the August Mediums add-on and the Stain stencil from Prima.
Also from the Mediums is the Blue Fern Studios Embossing Powder in Mushroom that I used to treat the BFS chipboard Layering Stems that came in the Main Kit.

From my stash, I've used corrugated packaging in the background and cheesecloth and sea shells on the bottom of my photo.
The pearl strands are from the Embellishment add-on; the bit of Jillibean Soup Wordfetti is from an earlier kit.

Vincent is part fish; he's loved the water since infancy. He had a ball in the ocean, enjoying the waves and splashes.

Sun Kissed

For all of its muted elegance, the Tranquility collection from Blue Fern Studios that came in the August Swirlydoos kit works well with photos of my grandchildren at the Jersey Shore last month.

I wanted the lace patterns down the sides of my paper (the Contentment sheet) to show, so I kept my design pretty simple. I cut some pieces from the Stillness sheet into varied sizes and heavily distressed all sides but one; I decided to use my EK Success Swiss Cheese punch to create some interest.
Once my pieces were assembled, I attached my photo and adhered it a bit askew to my base, using a Petaloo doily from the July kit as a background.

I've embellished it all with BFS flowers from the Main Kit and more BFS flowers, as well as some Petaloo blooms from the Flower Add-On. As a final touch, I added a bit of bling from the Embellishment Add-On and topped it all off with that sweet cherub - part of an incredible RAK from Rae Moses.

A sun-kissed young lady at the end of a very busy day "down the Shore"... (Many thanks to my DIL for her awesome photos!)

Picnic

My next layout using the August Tranquility kit from Swirlydoos features more of the Blue Fern Studios Tranquility collection.
I wanted a more rustic look for this photo, so I chose to use the reverse side of the Jubilation sheet for my base and the Serenity page for my matting and embellishing.
First, I fussy cut the flowers that run across the bottom; then I cut the rest of the papers in various sizes to form my matting. These were lightly distressed and inked before being assembled and stapled together and then adhered to my picture.
Meanwhile, I took out some of the fun pieces that Krissy had included in the main kit: DoCraft Country Life wooden signs, Craftwood picket fencing from Darice and a couple of mini clothespins. The wooden signs were first colored with Ranger Distress Ink in Pumice Stone. When the ink was totally dry, I lightly swiped them with watered down gesso that was left from whitewashing my fence pieces.
Before gluing the clothespins to the butterflies, I ran a bit of 1/8" Score Tape along the tops and coated them with the BFS glitter in Army Dust.
This same glitter was used to coat the Foliage stickers by Queen & Co. that, along with the Magnolia Lane die cut ephemera by Ultimate Crafts, was included in the Embellishment add-on.
That beautiful water lily by BFS came in the main kit; the Petaloo blooms were part of the Flower add-on.
The one thing from my stash is Prima's alphabet stickers from the Divine Collection.

That's me, my brother Jack and my sister Jean enjoying our meal at the picnic table that our father built just for us in 1952.
Back in the summer days before air conditioning, my mother would prepare such dishes as potato and macaroni salads and baked beans in the cool of the morning to avoid heating up the house. Dad would cook the meat out on the brick grill next to the picnic table and we would often eat outside. There was a rainy day option - a back porch with windows along one wall that would open up to give us a breeze through the screens.

Remember This

The Tranquility Collection by Blue Fern Studios is perfect for vintage photos and the August 2016 sketch from Swirlydoos is perfect for these images and I've used the Calm pattern paper as a base for my layout.

I decided to try using the Ranger Distress Grit Paste that came in the August Mediums Add-On with one of my favorite stencils (Prima #560898) to create a background and I'm so pleased with the results - a clear white with a lot of texture.
The Mediums Kit also came with several jars of BFS embossing powders, in Mushroom and In the Navy. I've used these on my chipboard butterflies from Bo Bunny, part of the Embellishment Add-On.

Once all was prepped and dried, I matted my photos with some scraps before adhering them to the base.
Next, I took some lace that I've had for quite a while and used it to create a border on the bottom of the images, as well as a strip in the upper corner.
Some of the flowers are from the Flower Add-On; most are from my stash. (Yes, I'm really trying to use up my er, collection.)
Also from the collection are a crystal dangle and the Melissa Frances resin banner that has become my title.

The woman in the first photo is my mother; the men in the second are three of her four brothers, my Uncles Vinny, Pat and Paul. They were standing in my grandmother's back yard behind the garage and in front of her rock garden.
The back of the photos were stamped "March  1943", but the trees in the background are too full for a March in western New York; in fact, they wouldn't have started to bud yet. Judging from the sweaters that my mother and Uncle Pat were wearing, I'm guessing that they were taken in October, 1942.
