A Junk Journal

The July Cards, Tags and More Kit from Très Jolie came with a Tim Holtz fabric journal, an 8” x 8” pad featuring Stamperia’s Imagine collection, and a ton of trims and odds and ends, all the ingredients need to make a junk journal.

I added a (very) few items from my stash and got started.

Here’s what I came up with…

I started by measuring and cutting the script paper to wrap around the entire outside cover. After distressing and inking the edges, I glued it on with matte gel medium. (I used this medium throughout the album.)

I fussy cut this beautiful image for my front and adhered it to the front, adding a few words cut from another page. I finished with a small piece cut from one of the trims and a button of my own.

And now for the inside:

Quick and simple: I created a bottom layer from the patterned paper, added a piece of trim, then a cut apart and a fussy cut sentiment. It needed a little “something else”, so I added a couple of buttons to the top and bottom.

Another layer of distressed and inked patterned paper forms the base; I’ve added a torn piece of music paper, a cut apart bookmark and a fussy cut sentiment backed with packaging for dimension. I cut a piece of the doily to glue to the edge of the page and sewed a button on the remaining piece before gluing it down.

************

I tore one of the book pages that was included in the kit to fit the pages and inked the edges, glued it down and topped it with a scrap of patterned paper and a bit of the music paper. I added a small bit of trim (cut from the piece that I used on the next page) and a ticket and a bit of Flair that I colored with Metallique wax.Meanwhile, I dug out my long-neglected nibs and used one to color this cute little girl’s dress and bow before sitting her down.

Kim aged a lot of the miscellaneous items before packaging them, but I decided that I wanted some of them to look even older, so I brewed a gallon of tea and went to work on the tags and guest checks and a few other items. While I was at it, I dunked the enclosed white lace into a cup of coffee and let it sit for five minutes. This is a piece of that lace glued to the side before adding the guest check. I folded this over at the bottom to form a pocket that I trimmed with the rest of the piece from the previous page.I stenciled an image onto the tag, using the same Distress ink that colors all my edges. The reinforcers came off the tags when I soaked them in the tea, and I took advantage of this by inking them before reattaching them.I finished this page by placing a few small cut apart tags in the pocket.

One of my favorite bits of miscellany is the laundry list. (This is one of the pieces that I dunked in tea; I wrung the tea bags out over part of the paper to further darken it.)I cut it to size, making sure that the “dress” line was placed where I wanted. I treated the gold filigree frame with Metallique wax to tone it down and glued it to the page. The dress was fussy cut from the patterned paper and inked around the edges before backing it with a piece of packaging and adding it to the page.

The bottom layer here is more of the music paper, topped with the top of that laundry list. I added a very thin strip of music and a fussy cut heart and sentiment. It still looked a little empty, so I created a couple of stapled “x”s in the corners.

************

This is just a few layers of paper and ephemera. The hidden word on the milk cap is “milk”, but I liked it better this way.

Again, a quite simple page: a layer of patterned paper, topped with a stenciled tag and a playing card. I added a horseshoe cutout and a charm that’s been looking for a good home for the past few months.

************

I finished the first signature by layering a cut apart over a pretty piece of lace with a piece of patterned paper on the bottom and gluing a button with a jute bow on top.

This must be the most beautiful image in the entire collection. I set the frame offside to ensure that the page folds over and added a few cutout sentiments to the borders.

************

Speaking of beautiful: these sewn together layers of burlap and lace are part of the trim package. I placed it down the side of the pattern paper to cover the back of the frame from the previous page and added a few hat pins. I backed the dress with a few layers of packaging and glued it down to allow it to float with the music.

The bottom layer here is more of the patterned paper from the opposite page. I topped it from a tea-stained doily from my stash and an image from one of the other sheets. I added a couple of the resin pieces from the kit to the inside corners to finish it off.

 ************

I created this page by layering of cut apart pieces and ephemera. I used the top of the ticket sheet to edge the page.

There were so many cut apart tags; too many to go into the small amount of pockets that I created, so I decided to make a waterfall by backing each with one of the tickets and adding a resin piece as a weight.

************

I covered these next two pages with the script paper that was used for the cover.

I added a length of lace and then created a pocket for some of the cut aparts. This image was too pretty to hide, so I glued it to the front.

The dragonfly paper is a scrap of leftover wrapping tissue, double layered to let more of the critters show. I’ve attached a few layers of scraps and a fussy cut feather that just didn’t seem to want to go anywhere else.

 ************

The last of my pockets is attached to a guest check and contains two more of the stenciled tags.

I had this last page in mind right from the beginning, from the book page base to the stenciled circle (a piece of stained coffee filter) and ending with the top of a Bingo card.

This little cowgirl is smiling because she has a friend standing next to her and now, I need to explain “why” I had this page in mind.

I’ve received Bingo cards in kits before and they just accumulate in a pile because I don’t know what to do with them for some reason. This time, I had an “aha” moment for some reason. The “B-I-N-G-O” song started running through my mind and well, “Bingo”! I took out my package of Tim Holtz paper dolls and found the biggest dog in the bunch.

Let me flip over that circle and introduce you to Bingo the Dog…
