Down the Shore at Sunset

 

As soon as I opened the August Mixed Media Kit from Très Jolie, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. The shapes in the Prima Mould and the colors of the enclosed bottles of Distress Oxide Ink Spray called to mind this photo of my granddaughter taken a few weeks ago at the New Jersey Shore.

This project came together in no time: I spent a few minutes forming the clay pieces and another few creating texture on my canvas with crackle paste and a stencil and allowed it all to dry overnight.

I treated the clay pieces with Faded Jeans spray and put them aside to dry while I worked on the base of my project.

I began by spritzing the canvas here and there with a few short bursts of Distress Oxide Ink Spray in Antique Linen and gave it a few minutes to dry. Once it was no longer tacky, I shot it with Bundled Sage, then topped it with Faded Jeans. I love how this spray picks up the texture of the canvas and the cracks of the paste.

The clay pieces were now ready for the next step. Using a fan brush, I lightly dusted them with the Magical powder, then spritzed them with a small amount of water to give them a sheen and to allow the gold to settle in the crevices.

I printed out the photo on 5” x 7” paper and trimmed it just inside the white edges. Using a tape runner, I fastened it to a piece of white cardstock which I trimmed around to create an even border. This was attached to a layer of USPS packaging to create stability and dimension and glued to the center of the canvas with gel medium.

The lovely lady was backed with more of the packaging and glued down just below.

I dug out some of the flowers left over from previous kits and arranged them around the photo. (One of the flowers was treated with Antique Linen spray; it was too brightly white to blend in.) I removed the centers of the flowers in the bottom corner and replaced them with glass beads.

I tucked the clay flourishes and flowers around the blooms and finished by placing art stones here and there.
