Summer Outfits

The August kit from Très Jolie has a very masculine theme, with papers from Couture Creations’ Gentleman’s Emporium collection and metal embellishments from Prima, but Kim supplied enough flowers to turn “masculine” into “totally girly”.

 I think the colors and patterns are a perfect setting for this photo of my granddaughter from a year ago.

I started by cutting an 8” square from the center of Sheet 7A and putting it aside. The remaining “frame” was taped to a piece of chipboard to give it stability.

Next, I trimmed Sheet 11B to an 11½” square. After heavily distressing the edges, I inked them all around to give them some definition.

Using ScōrTape, I attached the sheet to the base.

I’ve had this stencil for years. It’s one of my favorites; I just love the beautiful flourish shapes. I wanted to achieve an off-white texture; Prima’s Stone Effect Paste in Pumice was perfect. I applied this twice, to show on the top and then the bottom of the photo, and allowed this to air dry overnight before going on to the next step.

After distressing and inking the edges of my photo, I taped it to a layer of packaging. I cut a slightly larger piece from the center that I had put aside, distressed and inked the edges and attached it under the photo.

I glued a doily from my stash to the base, and then placed the matted photo on top.

I started adding flowers from the kit around the photo.

The flowers from Prima’s Perfect Day package are more of a teal color. I gave one of them a good dose of Color Bloom mist to create a better match.

I coated several of the metal gears with wax and turned them into “girly” embellies.

Next, I added a couple of nailhead embellishments; they go so well with the flower centers.

To finish my layout, I scattered Art Stones here and there to close the “holes” in the flower clusters and to add just a bit more texture to the page.

Beardedness

This layout is my entry in Très Jolie Kit Club’s August Mood Board Challenge, using the pattern paper and embellishments that were included in the August kit.

This kit has a very masculine theme, with papers from Couture Creations’ Gentleman’s Emporium collection and tons of metal embellishments from Prima, as well as a Tim Holtz stencil and the perfect chipboard embellishment from Creative Embellishments – all of the components that I need to create the perfect setting for this photo of my great-grandfather, August Heinick.

I’ve taken a few liberties here: this photo was taken several decades after the “1897” seen in the layers and the title was interpreted somewhat broadly. My great-grandfather seems to have worn a mustache all through his adult life, but never a beard. But I love the title and it seems to fit the photo so well that I decided to go with it.

I knew that I’d be using a lot of metal embellishments, so I began by adhering my base paper to an 11¾” square of heavy cardstock to give it stability.

I used two stencils to add interest to the background: from my stash, a favorite by 13 @rts and from the kit, a layering stencil from Tim Holtz. I love how the crackle paste looks when it dries.

Meanwhile, I cut out the cut aparts on the “B” side of Sheet #10. In keeping with a few of the images from the mood board, I rounded all of the corners before inking the sides. I arranged them on a piece of packaging to fit behind my photo; this gave the entire piece an extra bit of dimension.

I selected one of the smaller cut aparts to place in the upper corner.

In keeping with the mood board theme, I altered the chipboard piece by giving it a good coating of Color Bloom mist in Antique Gold. Once it was dried, I adhered it to the side and bottom of the photo and attached the title piece.

I mentioned all of the metal embellishments that Kim packed into the kit; I actually used something from every package, starting with the clock faces. The smaller piece was tucked under the upper corner; I placed a small nail head in the center.

I placed the large piece in the opposite corner and embellished it with a few more pieces.

Next, I embellished the chipboard piece with a few of the trinkets.

I finished my layout by scattering more of the trinkets around the page.

Two Cards for Special Occasions

Talk about good timing! I needed to make a couple of cards to send out this week and the new Cards, Tags and More Kit from Très Jolie arrived on my doorstep last Thursday… It’s loaded with chippies and flowers and lace (oh my!) and best of all, Ciao Bella’s Romantic Times collection.

I needed to get the cards made and mailed by Saturday, so I kept them pretty much plain and simple.

I started by heat embossing two of the chipboard frames with Stampendous embossing powder and put them aside.

 Next, I selected the images that I wanted for my cards and cut them down to 4” x 5”. Two more pieces, at 4½” x 5½” were cut to serve as matting underneath. I inked all of the edges, adhered the layers together, then taped them to cardstock cut and scored to fit.

 The actual flower centers were made with bunched micro beads – a little too thick to mail in a regular envelope. I removed them (they should come in handy later on!) and replaced them with flat bottom pearls.

I was going to add a few chipboard leaves, but I didn’t like the look, so I snipped off a bit of the crochet lace, cut it in half lengthwise and tucked it underneath.

And that’s it: two cards made in under 30 minutes and on their way!
