I'm
up for Team 1, Week 3 in the March Round Robin at Swirlydoos. The theme is
"Going Green", so appropriate for the month of St. Patrick's Day and
the beginning of Spring, and the challenge is to Go Green in several ways.
Along with including the color green in the layout, we're asked to include some
greenery, aka foliage and to use a recycled item.
There
are some twists, of course, and the first is to see outdoor pictures. We're
also challenged to either grunge it up or make a true Swirly style page. The
last twist is to dig into our embellishments - chipboards, metals, flowers...
As
soon as Kim posted this challenge, I knew that I just had to scrap this photo -
3 of my Darby uncles in 1943. Given the year, Uncle Vinny (dressed in civies)
would have been on leave from the Merchant Marines and Uncle Paul (in uniform)
would have been on leave from the Army before shipping out to Europe. Uncle Pat
was a mere 11 years old and in the 6th grade.
Not
only did I select the photo, but I unearthed my leftover Graphic 45 Time to
Flourish paper, crossing my fingers that I would find me some March papers. My
Irish luck held out and I found enough for this page, with a bit left over.
Sherri's
layout and Ginny's lift gave me a wonderful roadmap, with a great design,
including a patchwork of 1" squares on either side of the photo. I've
taken the liberty of flipping the page to the side to go with the orientation
of my photo and I've taken a few more liberties here and there, but that's what
lifting is all about, right?
My
chippies were coated with gesso and then covered with some of the Blue Fern
Studios that came in the August 2016 Swirlydoos Main Kit. Also from that kit
are the last of the Flower Add-On blooms - the small rosebuds that I've tucked
in with the larger flowers.
I
mentioned taking liberties; Sherri and Ginny tucked bits of cheesecloth among
their flower clusters. Somehow, bits of excelsior seemed to go with this more
masculine page.
Oh,
yes! The challenges! Well, despite my off-white background, I've included
plenty of green, using paper, flowers and glitter. I've let my die-cut leaves do double duty here: as foliage and as
a recycled item - they're actually the packaging from my tea bags.
