A Son of Ireland

The Son of Ireland in my title is my Great-Grandfather McCormick. He was born in Ireland on March 15, 1838 – only two days before St. Patrick’s Day – close enough for me!

The base of my layout is from Graphic 45’s A Place in Time collection; I love the neutral colors and the look of long-ago time. To give a bit of a St. Patrick’s Day look, I cut a circle from the Time to Flourish 8x8 paper pad and adhered it to the base.
Next, I stripped a piece of corrugated packaging and colored it with Prima Metallique acrylic paint in Emerald Green. While that was drying, I treated the chipboard vines by applying a coat of gesso and sprinkling on embossing powder and then heat drying it. The vines and the corrugate were then lightly sanded and given a light coat of Distress Ink to give them an aged appearance.

Time to assemble and I couldn’t stop! I’ve used flowers from my stash (I’ve owned those large green ones for years, just waiting for the perfect occasion, I guess. I’m so glad that I had hung on to them!), metal flowers treated with Opal Magic Wax and centered with rhinestones, and a dose of microbeads.

I finished it off with a journaling tag tucked behind the photo.

(Full thanks and credit go to my cousin, Joe Darby for scanning and uploading a treasure trove of family photos to CDs to share with all of us some years back and for finding this newspaper clipping while doing family research.)

  1. Hello! It appears we are cousins. I was doing a little family tree searching this evening and ran across this blog. Very exciting! I have never seen this picture before and certainly never saw the obituary. So happy I ran across it. Thank you for posting.

    3. Okay, got it. Your grandfather and my grandmother were brother and sister. Was your grandmother's maiden name Freeman?

    4. Yes, my Grandmother was Margaret Freeman, married to John McCormick. And yes, if Jane Darby was your Grandmother then my Grandfather and her were brother and sister.
My email address is mccormick1390@verizon.net....if that is easier for communicating you can use that one.
