Art Journaling: Build Your Wings

I’ve decided to try to add to my Art Journal every month, using elements from the current Très Jolie Kit.
The July Cards, Tags and More Kit was all about cards, so why not use up my scraps this time?
As usual, I started out with a beginning idea and then let things just fall into place.
This is what I ended up with.

And here’s how it came together.

I began, as usual, by coating my pages with gel medium to give them strength and stability. (I tucked a sheet of parchment paper underneath the pages to protect the other layers.)
I took out all of the bits and pieces that were left over from my cards and tore them into smaller sizes.

Using matte gel medium, I began to collage the pieces onto my pretreated pages. No plan here, other than to scatter the colors and patterns around the area. When I was done, I used my heat tool to thoroughly dry the pages.

I next applied crackle texture paste, coating some areas thinly and others pretty thickly to create a variety of textures. I allowed this to set for about an hour, then applied my heat tool to ensure that the texture paste was completely set.

I sprayed the pages with Color Bloom mist, concentrating it in random spots…

…and then sprayed it with water.

I blotted this with a paper towel…

… and repeated the process. When I was satisfied with the results, I used my heat tool to set the ink.

***What you see from here on is a little more gold and less brown than the actual results; I couldn’t get an accurate image due to the light reacting to the mica sheen.***

I selected two Paper Dolls and glued them down. I love how the image on the right matches the sentiment of the adjoining scrap.

I had started with a vague idea of using these geese left from the Main Kit; they seem to fit in perfectly here.

I added some sentiment strips, using a wet brush to lightly cover them with the mist on the page to give them an aged look. The bottom of the right page looked empty, so I added a scrap of printed vellum to fill in the gap.
Lastly, I applied gel medium to the paper dolls and sentiments to seal them.

And that was it; my July journal page was done!
